Spring Cleaning- Hurricane Season Prep

It’s that time of year again! The sun is shining and the flowers are blooming. Spring cleaning is at the top of everyone’s to-do list. What does that look like for us Floridians? Organizing the rooms in our home, decluttering our belongings, dusting windows and doors, and unfortunately, preparing for hurricane season.

It’s a great time to get started on preparing for what’s to come. But don’t worry, we’ve got tips and tricks to help you gain the confidence you need to enter this year’s hurricane season. And remember, we’re all in this together. We’re always here for you, Florida!

Organize Your Belongings

This may seem like a cliché spring-cleaning task, but it’s quite important when preparing for hurricane season. Organizing your belongings can save you time and money in the case of loss or damages. Having an updated record of all of your belongings, especially valuable ones, is important when it comes to your policy coverage. This will help to ensure your coverage meets all your needs in times of loss. It will save you time and keep things organized when you need it most.

Review Your Insurance Policies

Springtime is a great opportunity to check your insurance policies and make sure you are adequately covered. Storm damages are very possible, so it’s important to make sure your insurance policies are just as prepared as you are. We also suggest you make copies of your insurance documents and take them digitally or in a waterproof container in case of an evacuation.

 Declutter Your Home

Much like organizing, decluttering takes your home to the next level. Our belongings can quickly accumulate especially after the holiday season. The clutter can become overwhelming and even hinder our homes from their full potential. It’s important to clear your home as best as possible especially before hurricane season. Some risks of overcluttered homes are fire hazards, blocked exits, water damage, and more. To get started this spring, here are a few simple tips:

  • Work on one room at a time.
  • Consider your storage options for every belonging.
  • Ask yourself the last time an item was useful to you or if it can be discarded/donated.
  • Organize your clothing and consider donating items you haven’t worn within the past year.
  • Work together! If you live with family or other roommates, work together on tackling the rooms and making decisions.

 Clean Your Pool

It’s finally time to uncover your pool and you are ready to dive in! Before you do, take this opportunity to do a deep clean of your pool. Remove any debris from your pool with a hand-held net and an automatic vacuum. This improves your pool’s circulatory system and prevents debris from becoming projectiles in windy storm conditions.

Evaluate your Roof

As Florida homeowners, we must be aware of any signs indicating the need for a roof replacement. As hurricane season is approaching, it is crucial to evaluate your roof in case it needs to be renovated or replaced. You won’t want to find yourself stuck in the middle of hurricane season with a faulty roof.  For more information on roof evaluation, check out our blog here.
